The most important aspects of Nieghborhood Garden project is the series of workshops set along the process of creation and development of an urban garden, as well as a series of open social/cultural events – workshops, meetings, lectures, concerts by Polish and German local artists – the aim of which will be to strengthen the sense of community, civic awareness and local identity within the Pomerania Region. These events and actions, primarily a community building processes, will also be used as a medium for the promotion of the project itself and its basic ideas, both in Szczecin as well as within the Euroregion.
Gardening workshops will consist of two parts – theoretical and practical. In the theoretical part participants will gain knowledge about ecological gardening, urban gardening, permaculture, etc. This part will also provide participants with knowledge about ways of engaging local community, about organizing voluntary work, etc. Practical part of the workshops will basically consist in the application of the theoretical knowledge into practice – this will involve work in the garden space, preparation of soil, sowing, plant care, as well as natural pest prevention, minimizing the negative environmental impact, work with volunteers, organization of workshops for local community, etc.
In addition to garden theory and practice, participants will have an opportunity to join photography workshops (documentary photography, macro-photography, making-of-photography-exhibition workshop), in most part putting emphasis on photography practice.
Very important role among our workshop experts will be played by people from Nomadisch Grűn, an association which in 2009 created “Prinzessinnengarten”, an urban garden in the center of Kreuzberg, Berlin. Five-year experience in running and developing the garden makes our experts well equipped to teach about urban gardening as well as to help us with the process of creating a garden of our own.
Apart from Nomadisch Grűn we will be joined by experts from schloss broellin e.V., our partner organization, who gained their knowledge and experience in urban gardening in Glasgow, where within the project ran by Urban Roots they had helped to create a community urban garden.
